The Story of the World's Richest Man's Journey to Hajj

In 1324, Mansa Musa, the ruler of the Mali Empire, set out for Makkah. He is widely considered the wealthiest individual in human history.

The Golden Caravan

His caravan was legendary. It consisted of:

  • 60,000 men.
  • 12,000 slaves, each carrying gold bars.
  • Heralds dressed in silk with gold staffs.
  • 80 camels carrying tons of gold dust.

Generosity En Route

As he traveled through Cairo and Medina, Mansa Musa gave away so much gold to the poor and to charitable causes that he inadvertently caused hyperinflation. The value of gold in Egypt plummeted and took over a decade to recover.

Building Mosques

On his return, he brought back scholars and architects who helped build the famous mosques of Timbuktu and Gao, establishing Mali as a center of Islamic learning.

A Legacy of Faith

Despite his unimaginable wealth, Mansa Musa undertook the arduous journey to fulfill his religious obligation. His story is not just about gold, but about the priority of faith over worldly power.
